FSCJ District Board of Trustees New Member and Reappointments Announced

Nov 1, 2022, 10:57 AM

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Florida State College at Jacksonville’s (FSCJ) District Board of Trustees welcomes Dr. Jennifer Brown as its newest member, appointed by Governor Ron DeSantis. Dr. Brown will replace Board Chair Karen Bowling. Additionally, Duval County Vice Chair Thomas “Mac” McGehee and Trustee Wayne Young were reappointed by Governor DeSantis.

Brown, of Jacksonville, is the Executive Director of KIPP Jacksonville Charter Schools. Brown is a proud U.S. Army Veteran who served in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. She is a current board member for the Northeast Florida Women Veterans Association. Brown earned a bachelor’s degree from Winthrop University and her doctorate in educational leadership and policy from Vanderbilt. Brown is appointed to a four-year term.

“Karen Bowling has been an invaluable member of the Florida State College at Jacksonville District Board of Trustees since 2011,” said Interim College President Kevin Hyde. “Throughout this time, Karen has been instrumental in overseeing the upgrade to processes and systems that better serve our students in regards to enrollment, financial aid, completion and everything in between. Over the past eight years, her leadership has given us insight and steered FSCJ to where we are today. We consider her a great friend and wish her all the best as she continues supporting our community in tremendous ways.”

“Dr. Brown has a remarkable reputation as a key thought leader as she's devoted herself to furthering the college-going and persistence culture here in the community,” said President Hyde. “We are fortunate to have Vice-Chair McGehee and Trustee Young continue their service on our District Board of Trustees. Their commitment and leadership has been invaluable to this institution and we look to their guidance for our continued success for the students and communities we serve.”

Governor DeSantis is acting on three of the seven expired appointments and the other four appointments are still under review. As soon as the Governor makes any decisions about the remaining term expirations, an announcement will be made. The appointments are subject to confirmation by the Florida Senate.

During the August meeting, the FSCJ District Board of Trustees will elect new officers for Chair and Vice Chair to represent both Duval and Nassau counties.
