FSCJ Partners with DCPS GEAR UP to Offer STEAM Summer Camp Program

WHAT: : Florida State College at Jacksonville (FSCJ) has partnered with Duval County Public Schools’ (DCPS) GEAR UP program to offer summer camp for eighth grade students (rising ninth graders) from the following middle schools: Arlington Middle School, Matthew W. Gilbert Middle School, Jean Ribault Middle School, Northwestern Middle School, Highlands Middle School, Alfred I. duPont Middle School, Jefferson Davis Middle School, J.E.B. Stuart Middle School and Lake Shore Middle School.

Each week of camp will feature a different theme, all with a focus on STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics), and will rotate across four FSCJ locations. FSCJ will provide limited transportation for campers. Locations for pick-up/drop-off will be finalized and communicated prior to the start of camp.

Registration is required and the application can be found here. Admittance to one week of camp will be assigned on a first-come-first-served basis. Space is limited to 40 students per week. Completed applications may be dropped off in the GEAR UP rooms at the participating schools or by scanning and emailing to ali.hicks@fscj.edu. Parent/Guardian signatures must be included.

COST: The camp is free to eighth grade students from the middle schools noted above. Breakfast, lunch, snacks and field trips are included at no charge.

Exploring the superhero in culture through literature, film, television and media.

Hands-on exploration for those interested in health/medical careers.

Week 3: Programming BYTES
Computer programming to include an introduction to Raspberry Pi/Python and cyber security.

Week 4: Flying High: Aviation
Learn more about flight and aviation careers from actual pilots.
July 8-12, 2019

Week 5: YUM! Science of food
Explore the science behind food, cooking and learn about the future of food.
July 22-26, 2019

Breakfast will be served at 8 a.m. Camp begins and 9 a.m. and ends at 12:30 p.m. Lunch will be served at 12:30 p.m. Students should be picked up by 2 p.m.
