'Phantom of the Opera' will return to the Moran Theater as part of the FSCJ Artist Series' 50th seas

Nov 1, 2022, 10:59 AM
A return of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s “The Phantom of the Opera” will highlight the 2015-2016 Broadway in Jacksonville season during the FSCJ Artist Series’ 50th season, it was announced Monday night.

This will be the third time the Artist Series has brought “Phantom” to Jacksonville. The first time, in 1999, it played 24 performances (typically, a show that is part of the Broadway in Jacksonville season plays eight performances). It sold more than 65,000 tickets.

John Delaney, the mayor at the time, described the show’s impact as “the equivalent of a Florida-Georgia game or a Gator Bowl game.” “Phantom” came back again in 2006 for another run of almost three weeks. It will make its third appearance from Feb. 10-21, a run of 15 performances.

Joining it in the 20015-2016 Broadway in Jacksonville season will be the local premiere of Berry Gordy’s autobiographical “Motown the Musical,” “Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas! The Musical” and “42nd Street.” Two other Broadway musicals, “Disney’s Beauty and the Beast” and “Mamma Mia!” will be part of the 50th season but not part of the Broadway in Jacksonville season.

First up in the four show Broadway subscription series will be “How the Grinch Stole Christmas,” an adaptation of Dr. Seuss’s 1957 children’s book. It will visit the Moran Theater in The Times-Union Center for the Performing Arts from Dec. 1-6. Next “42nd Street,” a 1981 Tony Award winner for Best Musical, based on the 1933 movie, will play Jan. 12-17. “Motown the Musical,” which opened on Broadway in 2013 with a book by Motown founder Berry Gordy based on his 1994 autobiography “To Be Loved: The Music, the Magic, the Memories of Motown,” will play April 19-24.

“Beauty and the Beast,” a 1994 Broadway musical based on the 1991 Disney movie, will play from Oct. 9-11. “Mamma Mia!,” the jukebox musical featuring the music of ABBA, which opened on Broadway in 2000, will play May 6-7.

Season tickets to the Broadway in Jacksonville season are on sale now with four-show package prices starting at $136. Season tickets vary depending on the show time, day of the week, and seating location. Season tickets can be renewed or ordered for the first time by going www.artistseriesjax.org or by calling (904) 442-2929 or 1-888-860-2929.

A renewal brochure packet has been mailed to current FSCJ Artist Series subscribers, allowing them to confirm or request an upgrade to their seats. Current subscribers may also mail their invoices to the FSCJ Artist Series Box Office, 501 W. State Street, #109, Jacksonville, FL 32202. Tickets for individual shows won’t be available until later this year.
