This will be the third time the Artist Series has brought “Phantom” to Jacksonville. The first time, in 1999, it played 24 performances (typically, a show that is part of the Broadway in Jacksonville season plays eight performances). It sold more than 65,000 tickets.
John Delaney, the mayor at the time, described the show’s impact as “the equivalent of a Florida-Georgia game or a Gator Bowl game.” “Phantom” came back again in 2006 for another run of almost three weeks. It will make its third appearance from Feb. 10-21, a run of 15 performances.
Joining it in the 20015-2016 Broadway in Jacksonville season will be the local premiere of Berry Gordy’s autobiographical “Motown the Musical,” “Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas! The Musical” and “42nd Street.” Two other Broadway musicals, “Disney’s Beauty and the Beast” and “Mamma Mia!” will be part of the 50th season but not part of the Broadway in Jacksonville season.
First up in the four show Broadway subscription series will be “How the Grinch Stole Christmas,” an adaptation of Dr. Seuss’s 1957 children’s book. It will visit the Moran Theater in The Times-Union Center for the Performing Arts from Dec. 1-6. Next “42nd Street,” a 1981 Tony Award winner for Best Musical, based on the 1933 movie, will play Jan. 12-17. “Motown the Musical,” which opened on Broadway in 2013 with a book by Motown founder Berry Gordy based on his 1994 autobiography “To Be Loved: The Music, the Magic, the Memories of Motown,” will play April 19-24.
“Beauty and the Beast,” a 1994 Broadway musical based on the 1991 Disney movie, will play from Oct. 9-11. “Mamma Mia!,” the jukebox musical featuring the music of ABBA, which opened on Broadway in 2000, will play May 6-7.
