Logistics and Supply Chain Management Club Merges Learning with Giving Back

Nov 18, 2024, 12:50 PM

The FSCJ Logistics and Supply Chain Management Club, under the direction of Dr. Susan Amburgey, organized and conducted a service learning activity through a food drive called "Increase the Inventory" in collaboration with the FSCJ H.O.P.E. Food Pantry.

This activity was coordinated not only to help restock the pantry with high protein, high-quality products, but also to bring awareness to the pantry as a resource for all FSCJ students who may be struggling or having food insecurities. Over two months, students focused on how their involvement in the community is essential and helps other students like them.

The project was led by Dr. Amburgey and Club President Julianna Sudler, members of the Logistics Club and staff at Kent Campus under the direction of Academic Department Coordinator Donna Speegle. Students enrolled in FSCJ's A.S. Supply Chain Management and B.A.S. Logistics programs and Duval County high school students in Dr. Amburgey's Warehouse Management class also got on board, helping to bring in additional donations.

Furthering their learning, the Dual Enrollment students participated in class-related lessons about how the donated items were "received" warehouse items. They participated in warehousing procedures such as receiving goods from "suppliers," counting inventory, quality assurance, and packaging techniques, including weighing items, ensuring safe and effective shipment of goods, and cataloging products and goods into packing slips that detailed the brand of the product, description of goods, quantities of items, weight in ounces that was then converted into pounds, along with the price(s) of individual items. The students will also learn inventory methods, including FIFO (First In, First Out) and pick-and-put-away methods, as they help place all the donated items on the food pantry shelves.

The donations were packed by the students, with the assistance of Alan Barrera, a B.A.S. in Logistics student and club member, in twenty shipping cases, six large boxes, and one industrial shipping kit, each containing a packing slip that details the items donated, along with how many items are packed within the case/box, the total weight, and the cost of each item.

Food Drive totals:
4,176 items
 donated
1,406 lbs. in food donated
$4,779.22 value of food donated
