FSCJ Opens New Military and Veterans Service Center at South Campus

Nov 14, 2024, 14:17 PM

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Florida State College at Jacksonville (FSCJ) opened its new Military and Veterans Service Center (MVSC), located at South Campus, with a ribbon-cutting ceremony.

FSCJ leadership, administrators, faculty, staff, students and alumni gathered with military, state and community leaders to celebrate the new, 4,800 square-foot-area, designed to provide and expand services for veteran and military students, and their dependents. The Center offers a holistic, student-centered environment that supports academic and career goals, in addition to their personal well-being.

“The entire FSCJ family takes great joy and pride in our opportunity to serve, partner and walk alongside this population of students,” said College President John Avendano, Ph.D. “As a representation of our great appreciation, we are excited to unveil the Military and Veterans Service Center to support all the men and women who have served and their families as they transition into their future.”

FSCJ’s MVSC is the principal advocate for active-duty military, veterans, military spouses and dependents at the College, ensuring their unique needs and challenges are met. Within this area, military and military-affiliated students are connected to critical resources and assistance that support their educational pursuit and a smooth transition to civilian life.

“This Center embodies our goal and charge to become the most military-friendly college in the nation,” said FSCJ Executive Director of Military Affairs & Veteran Services Mishaw Cuyler, Ph.D., Lieutenant Colonel (Ret). “The MVSC serves as the centerpiece in actualizing our vision.”

The design team used an open floor plan concept for the project to maximize space and provide a variety of flexible options for educational and personal resources. Students can take advantage of individual spaces for concentration as well as larger spaces for collaboration. Included are a large lounge area with gaming stations, a kitchen with lockers and a training classroom. The Center also houses offices and other amenities for staff.
