FSCJ to Host “Musing Women: An Art Invitational” Exhibit

Nov 1, 2022, 10:57 AM

WHAT: Florida State College at Jacksonville (FSCJ) is pleased to present “Musing Women: An Art Invitational,” an exhibition of works by local and regional female artists, on display in the South Campus Gallery from Monday, August 26 to Thursday, September 19, 2019.

“Musing Women” marks the 40th anniversary of “Kalliope,” FSCJ’s premier journal of women’s art and literature (in publication from 1979 to 2008), and includes former contributors to the journal, as well as other female artists practicing in the northeast Florida region. Exhibit visitors will also be able to see related historical materials from the FSCJ archives including journal covers, posters and video of “Kalliope” events.

Participating artists include Dimelza Broche, Louise Freshman Brown, Jillian Marie Browning, Bharati Chaudhuri, Sarah Crooks, Toni DeWitt, Nofa Dixon, Diane Farris, Amy Freeman, Sheila Goloborotko, Marsha Hatcher, Christie Holechek, Ana Kamiar, Erin Kendrick, Jan Tomlinson Master, Carol Prusa, Theresa Segal, Nancy Hamlin Vogler, Allison Watson and Marisa Yow.

With assistance from FSCJ and the Florida Arts Council, “Kalliope” was born out of a local women’s poetry collective that created the journal and, over the course of its thirty-year run, published interviews and sponsored speaking events with well-known authors such as Margaret Atwood and Marge Piercy and photographer Joyce Tenneson. The journal, named after the Greek Muse of epic poetry, showcased verse, prose, visual art and interviews with prominent artists and writers.
