60th Anniversary Banner

We invite you to join us as we celebrate 60 years of excellence in education and service!

Founded in 1965 as Florida Junior College, Florida State College at Jacksonville (FSCJ) has grown with the people we serve, becoming a trusted partner in education and a proud part of the education landscape on the First Coast. From fall 2025 through fall 2026, FSCJ is celebrating six decades of dedicated service to this community.

Since inception, the College has consistently fulfilled the mission of empowering students of all ages—with accessible pathways, innovative programs and enriching cultural experiences—becoming a cornerstone of education and opportunity in Northeast Florida. From our beginning as a forward-thinking institution to the present-day stature as a pathway to opportunity and a hub for workforce development, FSCJ’s journey over 60 years exemplifies the enduring commitment to transforming lives and uplifting communities.

Known affectionately as “the community’s college,” FSCJ continues to serve Duval and Nassau counties by offering affordable, high-quality education to students of all backgrounds, including recent high school graduates, working adults, active duty military service members, veterans and international learners.

Alumni Spotlight

SeQoya is a licensed Physical Therapist Assistant and current Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) student at the University of St. Augustine. SeQoya earned her Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Biomedical Sciences from FSCJ in 2020 and an Associate in Science (A.S.) in Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA) in 2022.

SeQoya currently works for Southeast Orthopedic Specialists and serves as the Flex SPTA President, promoting student engagement, leadership development, and professional growth within her DPT cohort. “My education at FSCJ really laid the foundation for where I am today. It helped me develop strong study habits, discipline, and the ability to think critically. The professors pushed us to be engaged and take ownership of our learning, which helped build the confidence I needed to continue my education and succeed in graduate school,” SeQoya shared.

During her time at FSCJ, SeQoya was a student worker and very involved in extracurricular activities. “Being a member of the Student Government Association and working on campus also played a big role in my growth. Those experiences helped me develop a strong work ethic, improve my public speaking skills, and build connections that have continued to open doors for me even today,” SeQoya added.

Dr. Nadia Ramoutar currently lives in Ireland and is a writer, filmmaker, and the Communications Director for Medical Missionaries of Mary. Before enrolling at FCCJ, Nadia’s family immigrated to the United States from Ireland, and neither of her parents attended college, so there were no expectations for her to do so either. Taking a chance, Nadia signed up for classes at FCCJ South Campus, where she was accepted into the Honors Program and became involved in the Student Government Association. Her involvement in extracurricular activities and connections she made with fellow students, faculty, and staff helped her adjust to American culture and academics. To this day, Nadia is still in contact with friends and advisors whom she met at FCCJ. After graduating from FCCJ in 1987, Nadia enrolled at the University of Florida, where she eventually earned a PhD in Communications.

Reflecting upon her time at FCCJ, Nadia shared that she felt so nurtured and encouraged at FCCJ that she learned how to be resilient and to embrace her individuality rather than try to hide it. “FCCJ prepared me well for the wonderful life I now have,” Nadia said.

Carley Cortopassi earned her Associate in Science (A.S.) in Occupational Therapist Assistant (OTA) from FSCJ in 2017 and her Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Human Services from FSCJ in 2024.

Carley currently works as a Certified OTA with Fleet Landing WELLInspired Living and as an FSCJ OTA Adjunct Professor, where she teaches multiple classes. “My education at FSCJ gave me the confidence to say yes when opportunities presented themselves, even when they felt overwhelming or a little scary. For example, I never would have imagined returning to FSCJ as an instructor,” Carley shared.

Throughout each of her degrees, Carley experienced dedicated support from the FSCJ community, and that support deepened her commitment to giving back to her community. As a student at FSCJ, Carley recalls receiving holistic support from her FSCJ instructors and their understanding that life outside the classroom can bring unexpected challenges. “My professors recognized those realities while still encouraging me to keep moving forward. I had instructors who genuinely cared about my growth not just as a student, but as a future professional, and that made a lasting impact on me,” Carley added.
