The third Faculty Colloquium was held April 12 with special guest speakers, Olympic Gold Medalist, Shannon Miller and Dr. Sarah Kiefe from the University of South Florida who both shared inspiring stories of meeting goals and motivating students. This was the first year we combined the Colloquium with the SLS Faculty Focus Day, and we had approximately 150 faculty and staff in attendance.

Professor Barbara Summers has a long history with FSCJ, beginning when she started taking classes at North Campus when she was only 17. She's now a full-time faculty member with the Adult Education program.

FSCJ Student Government Association (SGA) leaders Ta’Nasha Parker, Nadia Esha and Karixza “CC” Luna-Soliveras received statewide and regional recognition at the Florida College System Student Government Association (FCSSGA) April Year-End Conference which was held on April 12, 2019.

The SGA Collegewide President Ta’Nasha Parker was named the 2018-19 FCSSGA President of the Year. SGA Vice President Nadia Esha was named winner of the 2018-19 FCSSGA Region 1 Leadership Award. Additionally, FSCJ South Campus SGA Vice Chair Karixza “CC” Luna-Soliveras was elected by her peers to serve as the 2019-20 FCSSGA Region 1 Assistant Coordinator.

Nadia was also selected to be the April 2019 Chancellor's Clark Maxwell Scholar Student of the Month.

FSCJ BlueWave held their annual awards banquet recently and named the male and female athletes of the year, Softball Player Caitlyn Berry and Baseball Player Dalton Terrell.

New this year, the student athletes nominated and voted on Professor and Staff Person of the Year awards to honor people that have supported them throughout the year. They selected Professor Heidi Marshall and Student Success Advisor II Davion Manuel-McKenney. 

In addition, the baseball team was named the champion of the 2018-19 BlueWave Life Skills program. The program was established in the Fall of 2016 to enhance the lives of the student-athletes.

FSCJ Professor of Nursing Renata Henderson was selected to become a member of the 2019 Class of Northeast Florida’s Great 100 Nurses. She and other incoming members were celebrated at a recognition event on Saturday, May 11, 2019. She and her family are pictured at left.

AVP of Student Success Dr. Erin Richman recently published her first book, "Mary Blair Destiny," which is based on the true story of her grandmother, Dorothy, and how she discovered her birth parents through a series of accidents. Following the lessons from the main characters, Richman reveals to readers virtues of looking at life as one moment, and that this present moment is irreplaceable. The release party will be June 1 at Sheraton Four Points Oceanfront in Jacksonville Beach beginning at 5 p.m. Dr. Richman will lead a Q&A and reading at 6 p.m., followed by a book signing.

The first cohort of employee participants included Sarah Ashbrook, Jennifer Grey, Judy Jones-Liptrot, Jacqueline Kloin, Mark Lynn, Dianne Mcauliffe , Andrew Pierce, Lorne Richardson, Lisa VanZwoll and Matt Wetzel.

The Jacksonville Corporate Run 5k was held on May 2, at the Jacksonville Fairgrounds. More than 50 companies were involved and over 2,500  runners completed the event. FSCJ had 11 employees sign up, easily surpassing last year’s total of four. Our Team FSCJ Runners competed in the Education Division and our Men’s Team was first overall. 

FSCJ faculty, staff and students participated in a meal preparation service learning event for the Sulzbacher Center. They spent the day preparing, plating and serving food to residents and community members during the busy lunch hour. 

During the North Campus Faculty and Staff Appreciation Cookout, Rock & Roll Hall of Famer and former member of "The Hollies" Terry Sylvester entertained attendees along with Plant Maintenance Senior Supervisor Mark Gandy (electric guitar), Senior Support Specialist Pat Hague (drums) and Security Officer II Albert Murr (bass guitar).
