Commencement 2020 Update

The FSCJ Commencement Committee is hard at work to create a virtual ceremony to celebrate and honor our graduates for their accomplishments. We have partnered with two commencement vendors, MarchingOrder and StageClip, to assist in creating the virtual ceremony that will launch on July 2, 2020.

FSCJ graduates and viewers will watch as Dr. Avendano provides special remarks to honor the graduating class. The ceremony will also feature special guest speakers FSCJ District Board of Trustees Chair Thomas McGehee Jr., FSCJ Faculty Senate President Dr. John Woodward and Student Government Association Collegewide President SeQoya Williams.

Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs Dr. John Wall will confer baccalaureate and associate degrees as a customized graduate slideshow will display each graduate’s name, degree, honors, picture and special message.

Students who are eligible for the 2020 Commencement Ceremony should RSVP their participation by the May 22 deadline to receive their commemorative FSCJ Commencement box and to have their information included in the graduate slideshow. A formal list of all graduates will be included in the digital commencement program which will be posted online.

Don't forget to send in your videos to honor the graduates' hard work and achievements by May 22. Check the email that was sent from FSCJ Communications on May 7 for submission details.

Visionary Impact Plan

The College continues to work on the strategic plan, which we're calling the 2020 Visionary Impact Plan (VIP). The time we have been working remotely due to COVID-19 has presented a unique set of circumstances that require us to reconsider how we will be moving forward. We have decided that to best serve our students, community and College, we are going to extend the 2020 VIP process while implementing a one-year tactical strategic plan for the 2020-21 academic year.

Click the button below to learn about the extension plan that will lead us forward in the process.

Learning on Empty

The BRIDGES Title III program recently hosted Learning on Empty, a virtual event to share current institutional practices and efforts that contribute to the collective learning experience as it relates to advancing basic needs services and supports for students. The presentation revealed survey results from our students who participated in the #RealCollege survey, the nation’s largest and longest-running annual assessment of students’ basic needs. Our inaugural response rate was 3.8%. FSCJ joined a cohort of 226 institutions across the U.S. to examine the prevalence of food and housing insecurity and homelessness. The survey results can be found in the Data Library.

Return to Work Update

On the May 7 OnPoint call, Dr. Avendano shared that as we continue to work remotely, the facilities are being prepared to ensure they are safe for our phased return, which will begin on June 1 with supervisors. All faculty and staff should be working with their supervisors to determine when they should plan to return to work. Those who are in at-risk categories will be scheduled to return on a case-by-case basis and will not be put in positions where they feel unsafe.

Upon return, you are asked to be respectful of others and to wear a mask when you cannot maintain social distancing. We will be supplying masks to faculty and staff and are developing our distribution plan for those now.

“Coach Monts is, by far, the most decorated cross country coach to come out of the state of Florida’s junior college system so it was no surprise when the Florida NJCAA Council of Athletic Administrators chose to name the most prestigious award for a male and a female cross country runner after him," said FSCJ Director of Athletics Ginny Alexander.
