Inauguration 2020: President John Avendano, Ph.D.

The Inauguration Ceremony for College President John Avendano, Ph.D. will be on Friday, February 7, 2020, at the Nathan H. Wilson Center for the Arts. The ceremony will begin promptly at 9:30 a.m., immediately followed by a brunch reception in the Lakeside Room. Please arrive early to ensure you have time to find a seat. We anticipate the ceremony to end no later than 11 a.m.


For those who have submitted their RSVP to participate in the processional, please be on the lookout for communications with additional helpful details which will be coming soon.


Participants with disabilities requiring special accommodations should email with requests and/or questions.


FSCJ Author Series Events

As part of the 2020 Author Series, staff and students are invited to participate in the Author Series events which include DIY dog toys, 3-D printing in the STEAM lab and a book discussion. Be sure to join us for the author presentation and book signing as we welcome Craig Grossi, the author of "Craig & Fred a Marine, a Stray Dog and How They Rescued Each Other" on March 4 and 5. Business Speaker Series

Seats are still available for the next Business Speaker Series event, "Reshaping Career Options: The Rise of the Gig Economy," which will be held on January 30 from 9-10:30 a.m. at the Nathan H. Wilson Center for the Arts.


Vice President of Communications Candace Moody from CareerSource Northeast Florida will be joining us to present on the ways we work now and what may lie ahead in our future.

Community Wellness Summit

Join us on Friday, January 31, as we partner with Northeast Florida Council on Alcoholism and Drug Addiction (NEFCADA) to host a Community Wellness Summit at Downtown Campus. Community members, students, professionals and interested citizens are invited to learn about topics related to wellness, integrated health care, mental health, suicide prevention, trauma and other issues that affect our community. The event begins at 7:30 a.m. and lunch is included. Registration is free for FSCJ staff and students with ID.

Nominations are now being accepted for the annual Celebration of Student Success ceremonies. Faculty and staff are invited to nominate up to three students from your respective courses, programs, organizations or workplace for recognition. Students may be nominated from the Summer 2019, Fall 2019 and Spring 2020 Terms.

Achieve@FSCJ Spring Data Summit

The Achieve@FSCJ Spring 2020 Data Summit will take place on Friday, February 21, at the ATC Room T-140/141 from 9 a.m.-noon. We will focus on ADP/EDP retention data followed by a faculty panel discussing classroom retention and wrapping up with a discussion of early intervention strategies. This event is open to all FSCJ employees.

Map Your Future: Student Success Conference 2020

Save the date, April 2, for the Student Success Conference (previously known as the Student Life Skills Conference). This year’s theme, “Map Your Future,” will focus on our students’ success and how they can work toward achieving their goals. We are pleased this year to feature a panel of experts from a variety of professions who will share stories about their own personal career paths and inspire confidence in our students that they can be successful in their endeavors.

Faculty Colloquium


On April 3, faculty will come together for the annual Faculty Colloquium to collaborate on best practices for an engaging learning environment that promotes student success. We are pleased to share that this year's keynote speaker will be Jesse Stommel, a digital learning fellow and senior lecturer of digital studies at the University of Mary Washington. He is co-founder of Digital Pedagogy Lab and Hybrid Pedagogy: an open-access journal of learning, teaching and technology. He has a Ph.D. from the University of Colorado Boulder and is co-author of "An Urgency of Teachers: the Work of Critical Digital Pedagogy." FSCJ’s Dance Department to Present Spring Dance Concert Featuring the Cleo Parker Robinson Dance Ensemble

FSCJ's Dance Department, in partnership with Jacksonville University (JU) Linda Berry Stein College of Fine Arts and Episcopal School of Jacksonville (ESJ) Fine Arts, presents a spectacular evening of modern dance featuring students from FSCJ and JU and by the critically acclaimed Cleo Parker Robinson Dance Ensemble (CPRDE) of Denver, CO.


The Spring Dance Concert featuring CPRDE will be held on February 21 and 22, 2020, at 7:30 p.m., at the Nathan H. Wilson Center for the Arts on FSCJ’s South Campus.

Students in Professor Julia DeArriba-Montgomery's Digital Media Problem Solving course showcased their Travel Campaigns (for Imaginary Places) at the TEDxFSCJ “Unmasked” event. They did an amazing job, and were well received by both students and the community. The students' creativity shined through their new and innovative approaches.

FSCJ In Action

Organized by Professor Amanda Sartor, FSCJ's Mathematics Faculty recently participated in Math Field Day, where teams of middle schoolers from Duval County competed in different math competitions. FSCJ representatives checked answers for each event and ranked the teams accordingly. Faculty participants included Derek Pender, Ruth Dellinger-Young, Deborah Adams, Lee Seltzer, Cy Kitto, Wei Kitto, Jodie Broussard, Lyn Noble and Amanda Sartor.

Students in our massage therapy, dental hygiene and cosmetology programs participated in the annual Fall Family Festival at The Bethel Church across from Downtown Campus. FSCJ students gave demonstrations, provided information on healthy dental habits and provided free massages to attendees.
