Can the application fee be deferred for international students?

Yes, students can pay the application once they arrive in the U.S.

Are international students required to pay an advance tuition deposit?

No, international students are not required to pay an advance tuition deposit. Students must notify the English Language Institute of your decision to attend by emailing eli@fscj.edu.

What should I do to get a student visa?

Most international students attending the Intensive English Language program hold student (F1) visas. After a student is admitted to the program the student will receive an acceptance letter and a Certificate of Eligibility (I-20 Form). In order to obtain a student visa, present the Certificate of Eligibility (I-20 Form) to a United States embassy or consulate. The U.S. Department of State offers more information about obtaining a student visa.

If you are attending another college or university in the United States, you must obtain a new Form I-20 from the English Language Institute at Florida State College at Jacksonville. Be sure to complete the International Student Transfer Form. Your SEVIS record must be released from your former school to the English Language Institute at Florida State College at Jacksonville. If you have specific questions about student visas, you can email eli@fscj.edu.

When are classes held?

Classes are held during the day from Monday through Thursday at the Downtown Campus. There are no evening or weekend classes.

How will I be evaluated?

At the end of each semester students are given an exit exam. This exit exam will determine if students are ready to take the college placement test that will place them into college credit English language courses and degree programs. Students must place into college-credit English language to be admitted into a degree-seeking program. Those that are not ready and do not place into college-credit English language classes will need to repeat the Intensive English Language program.

What will I receive at the end of the semester?

At the end of each semester, students will receive a grade of satisfactory or unsatisfactory. Those students who attend 85% of all classes and receive a satisfactory grade will receive a Certificate of Completion. Each student will have a final conference to discuss progress and future plans.

What kinds of cultural activities can I expect?

Activities are planned to help students learn English and experience American culture. Examples include local trips to museums; the Jacksonville Zoo; cooking classes; tour of downtown Jacksonville; visit to St Augustine, the oldest city in the U.S; and American holiday celebrations.

How long can I study in the English Language Institute?

You may continue to study at for as long as you'd like as long as you are improving proficiency each semester. Many students study for at least two semesters in order to improve their level of English proficiency.

How can I pay the school fees?

All fees can be paid with cash, a cashier's check, money order, personal check made payable to Florida State College at Jacksonville, or credit cards.
