English Language Institute (ELI) English for Academic Purposes (EAP)

The mission for the English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) Program is to provide access to quality language acquisition instruction to enhance previously acquired education.

The program delivers exceptional education through technology-infused instruction and support that facilitates English language development and orients the students to U.S. civics, citizenship, and culture. ESOL prepares students to transition into other College programs and enables them to pursue economic success and assimilate as active citizens in northeast Florida’s diverse community.

The ESOL Program

  • Provides English language instruction to adults whose first language is not English.
  • Focuses on reading, writing, speaking, listening, vocabulary, grammar, and conversation with the goal of preparing students to use English for everyday life.
  • Is designed to teach students to listen, speak, read, and write English in seven life-skills topics:  Communication, Civics, Family and Community Resources, Employment, Consumer Education, Health and Nutrition, Transportation and Travel, and Safety and Security.
  • Pretests students in both listening and reading for placement with the Comprehensive Adult  Student Assessment System (CASAS) exam. The lower of the two skill areas determines the level for student placement.
  • Is a non-credit program
  • Offers 16-week, 12-week, and 8-week courses in the morning, afternoon, and evening at various sites.
