Fire Academy of the South

Providing unmatched first responder training.

The Fire Academy of the South (FAS) provides a wide range of training and educational opportunities to emergency responders in both the public and private sectors. Training levels range from basic skills and certification to advanced education with specialized technical training, including shipboard fire fighting and aircraft rescue fire fighting.

The FAS has state of the art training facilities with modern equipment including a new maritime fire trainer and aircraft rescue and fire fighting (ARFF) simiulator. FAS instructors have the knowledge, experience and industry credentials to provide quality training and certification. The FAS also possesses the ability to develop customized curriculum to meet the dynamic needs of the fire service and specific response parameters.

Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting (ARFF) Training

FAS is certified by the FAA to provide both the initial Part 139 training and the annual recertification burn. The FAS utilizes a state of the art simulator, training props, and a full size crash rescue vehicle. For more information contact Bob Coyne at (904) 997-4923 or email rcoyne@ fscj.edu.

Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Training

FAS offers Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) and paramedic training. EMT is offered every semester in an evening schedule. Paramedic training is offered both on an evening schedule and a shift-friendly schedule. For more information contact Terry Eaton at (904) 997-4951 or email teaton@fscj.edu.

Maritime Training

FAS offers specialized training for land-based fire fighters responding to shipboard emergencies. Utilizing a new state of the art trainer, students are instructed in accordance with NFPA 1005 and are eligible for ProBoard certification as a Marine Fire Fighter II. FAS also offers USCG approved basic and advanced fire fighting courses.

Industrial Fire Brigade

FAS offers Fire Brigade training to private industry addressing specific response criteria presented by each client. Courses range from basic fire extinguisher training to advanced fire brigade training that meets all NFPA and OSHA standards for first responder personnel.

Fire Fighter I and II Certification

The Fire Fighter certification program is a program that prepares students to take the Florida minimum standards written, oral and practical examination that is administered by the Bureau of Fire Standards and Training for initial employment as a fire fighter.

Program Details

Fire Science Cadet Academy

The Fire Science Cadet Academy is a two-year program providing recent high school graduates the opportunity to simultaneously obtain an Associate of Science degree in Fire Technology, an Emergency Medical Technician Level I certification and a Florida Firefighter certification. The program provides a strong foundation in community fire protection strategies such as fire prevention, fire chemistry, building construction and fire protection systems. Within two years you’ll be eligible and prepared to take the State of Florida’s Certification Exam. By passing the certification exams, three hours are credited to the associate degree, at which time students efficiently earn both a valuable academic credential and become certified as a fire professional in the state of Florida.

  • In-class training held Monday–Friday at FSCJ South Campus
  • Fire Academy training on Thursdays and Fridays
  • Obtain EMT Certification and Firefighter I & II Certification
  • Complete Associate in Science in Fire Science Technology in two years
  • Be prepared to take the Firefighter’s State Certification at the end of the program
  • Financial Aid is available to those who qualify
