“MY FAVORITE COOKBOOK”: BRAVO TOP CHEF TO LAUNCH FSCJ FOUNDATION FUNDRAISER SEPT. 18

By Michael Corby Thu, August 22, 2013 11:30 am EDT
FSCJ FOUNDATION AND JACKSONVILLE PUBLIC LIBRARY PARTNER TO LAUNCH “MY FAVORITE COOKBOOK”; BRAVO TOP CHEF ALUM GRAYSON SCHMITZ AT INAUGURAL EVENT SEPT. 18, 2013

Florida State College Foundation and the Jacksonville Public Library are partnering to launch the “My Favorite Cookbook” event to benefit FSCJ’s Culinary Program.  The inaugural event on Sept. 18 will feature popular celebrity chef Grayson Schmitz – a fan favorite from Bravo’s Top Chef Texas.
The kick off event takes place at the Jacksonville Public Library’s Main Library and includes a private reception with Foundation donors, sponsors and ticketed guests. The reception features the opportunity to  meet Schmitz, who will work with FSCJ Culinary Program students to create a signature dish inspired by her favorite cookbook, The Joy of Cooking.

Following the private reception, guests will be able to take advantage of priority seating to hear Schmitz speak about her culinary journey and why The Joy of Cooking is her favorite cookbook, as well as provide a "cheftestant's" view of Top Chef.

Tickets for the private reception event at 5:30 p.m. are $75, and the 7 p.m. general program is free. Seating for the program portion is limited, and available on first-come basis.  Following the program, guests have the opportunity to meet Schmitz as well as purchase copies of The Joy of Cooking for signing.

“This unique partnership between FSCJ and the Jacksonville Public Library really puts the spotlight on our culinary program, and pays homage to the thriving foodie community in North Florida,” said Maggie Hightower, Executive Director of FSCJ Foundation.”We’re excited to bring together love of food and cooking – and the natural tie-in of cookbooks and culinary reading with the library – to bring this one-of-a-kind event to Jacksonville.”

Cookbooks rank among the top categories at the Jacksonville Public Library. “Cookbooks and culinary-themed books consistently are one of the most in-demand categories of books checked out from the Jacksonville Public Library,” said Barbara Gubbin, Director,  Jacksonville Public Library. “The My Favorite Cookbook series is such a perfect fit for us to be able to bring to our customers and the community. Nothing brings people together like the love of cooking and food. We can’t wait to launch this new event series with Grayson Schmitz.”

Schmitz credits her straight-talking swagger to her family and mid-western values. Like her personality, Schmitz’s food is inspiring, but not pretentious. She prides herself on complex flavors with rustic preparation. From cheese curds and beer to foie and Burgundy, Schmitz loves food and how it brings people together.

Schmitz began working in professional kitchens at age 15. After high school, she migrated to the East coast to pursue schooling in culinary arts. Upon graduation from the Culinary Institute of America (CIA), she spent her formative years training under the best chefs in New York City, including Jean Georges Vongerichten, Fabbio Trabocchi, and Kurt Gutenbrunner. Prior to the airing of Top Chef, Schmitz developed recipes for Olivier Cheng in New York.

Grayson is currently Chef de Cuisine at Willow Road in New York.
