Information, Services and Policies

The Florida State College at Jacksonville Library/Learning Commons (LLC) has locations at four campuses, three centers, and a centralized Library Technical Services (LTS).

The LLC facilitates tutoring services across a variety of disciplines. Each location has a unique range of services dependent upon academic offerings. Contact the LLC directly for specific information, including hours of service.

The LLC houses a wide range of library services including a collection of print materials, electronic database subscriptions, periodicals, microforms, and a variety of audio-visual and multimedia materials. The library collections are organized using the Library of Congress Classification System.

Users have access to the Florida State College collection of 191,542 titles; 257,473 book volumes; and an audio-visual collection of 23,320 items (per June 30, 2009 CCLA reports). In addition, registered users have access to e-book titles and research databases through the Florida State College at Jacksonville Library/Learning Commons’ collections.

Florida State College at Jacksonville is part of a statewide automated information system which electronically connects state college and community college library collections. Use of the online catalog (LINCC) allows access to the Florida State College at Jacksonville collections, other college library collections, electronic databases, and worldwide information resources.

Instruction, Reference and Research Assistance

Professional instruction, reference and research assistance are available upon request. Individual research assistance may be requested at the LLC Reference Desk.

Reference resources include materials in print format and electronic databases. Instruction in searching and retrieval procedures for electronic resources is provided.

Orientation Program and Library Instruction

Library and information literacy (ILAS) instruction is provided in many formats, both for individual students and for classes/groups. Presentations may be tailored for specific subject areas, and instructors from all disciplines are encouraged to request customized instruction for their classes. Methods of instruction include lecture/demonstration, use of audio-visual materials, computerized adaptive instruction, and individualized instruction.

  • Customized Instruction - discuss with librarians.
  • Library Information Courses - on-site and online library courses are offered at the present time.
  • Handouts describing use of standard materials and library services are available.
Special Services

Library services for students with disabilities are facilitated by the use of campus/center resources. Eligible students should discuss arrangements and procedures for using these services with the Library/Learning Commons staff or with Disabled Student Services. Fax services for students may be available at some locations.

Audio-Visual/Multimedia Production

The scope of audio-visual/multimedia production service varies by location. Please discuss requests with the LLC staff.

Listening and Viewing Stations

Students may use individualized study stations and rooms equipped for groups with various listening and viewing equipment on a first-come, first-served basis. Please discuss requests with the library staff.

Access Policies

The Library/Learning Commons is an instructional area. It is open to faculty, staff, and students enrolled in a Florida State College at Jacksonville course for which learning support services are provided.

Use of services and facilities implies full acceptance of the policies of the LLC and the College (including the College’s Computing Facilities Policies and User Agreement).

Access for Children

Policies regarding the presence of children vary by location depending on local conditions. At many locations, children are not permitted in the Library/Learning Commons. Please contact the specific campus/center for individual policy.

Academic Computing

Computers are available to currently enrolled students with priority access for users completing academic work. Students may be asked to vacate a workstation if those conducting research need access.

Computers and wireless access require log-in using an assigned Student User ID. Printing is currently not available from wireless connections at some locations.

Computer activities are monitored and users are responsible for all activity conducted under an assigned Student User ID. It is considered a violation of policy to access images, sounds, or messages that could reasonably be expected to create an atmosphere of discomfort or harassment.

Printing is limited to course-related material. Photocopiers are available for a fee if multiple copies of a document are needed.

Academic Environment

Cell phone ringers must be silenced and phone conversations must be taken outside the building.

All users are expected to assist in maintaining an environment conducive to learning.

Anyone violating policies or disrupting the environment will be asked to leave the Library/Learning Commons. The privilege of using the resources can be suspended or removed due to unacceptable behavior or violation of college policies.

Circulation Policies

1. Eligibility

  • Any currently enrolled Florida State College at Jacksonville student may use and borrow materials from any Florida State College at Jacksonville library. A photo ID must be presented for identification upon checkout.
  • Florida State College at Jacksonville employees, current and retired, also have full library privileges. A photo ID is needed for identification upon checkout.
  • The general public may use limited library resources in-house.

2. Loan Period

  • Books and sound recordings may be borrowed for a period of two (2) weeks.
  • Videotapes and DVDs are available. These materials may be borrowed at some locations.
  • Reference materials are available for in-house use only.
  • Reserve materials are available for in-house use or may be borrowed according to the instructor's directions.
Intercampus and Interlibrary Loan

Intercampus loans can be arranged for materials located in another Florida State College at Jacksonville library's collection. Patrons may either request a desired item online or check with the staff at the Circulation Desk.

If no Florida State College at Jacksonville campus/center library owns the material needed, check with the staff at the Circulation Desk.

Arrangements may be made for eligible patrons to borrow the materials from another library. Often, materials can be obtained within a very short time using Interlibrary Loan.

Reserve Collection
  • Placing Materials on Reserve
    Instructors may have materials placed on reserve. Reserve materials are circulated for a period less than their regular loan period. Arrangements should be made a minimum of three days in advance before releasing the reserve list to students.
  • Reserve Loan Period
    Reserve materials are available for in-house use or may be borrowed according to instructor's directions.
Recalls

Items are subject to recall if requested by another patron, or immediately if the item is to be placed on Reserve.

Holds

Holds are filled on a first-come, first-served basis and do not have a set arrival date. Once the requested item arrives at the patron’s designated pickup location and is available for checkout, the patron will be contacted by staff via phone or e-mail. Holds are kept at the selected pickup library up to seven days from notification. Unfilled holds expire after two months.

Borrowers encountering problems in placing holds online should contact the library staff.

Hold Restrictions
  • Holds may not be placed on reference items, e-books, Special Collections material, or other specially designated items.
  • To place multiple holds on a title, please contact the library staff.
Renewals

Materials may be renewed online via My Online Library Account or in person. Items with hold requests will not be renewed.

Overdue Materials

Late notices are sent to the borrower’s e-mail account. Materials more than 30 days overdue are automatically converted to lost status and a financial hold is placed on the student’s College records.

Book Drops

24 hour book drops are located on most campus/centers.
