Academic Advising

Orientation

The purpose of orientation is to provide students with the information they need to successfully begin their college studies. It is part of the admissions process that is completed after you have been accepted to Florida State College. Orientation will provide students with a fun and engaging introduction to the College and to college life.

Students enrolling at Florida State College must complete New Learner Orientation — a self-paced, non-credit orientation — prior to attending an advising session and receiving clearance for registration. To access New Learner Orientation, log in to Connections and select New Learner Orientation from the Quick Links section.

Please visit your campus Student Success Office or call the Welcome Center to register for New Learner Orientation.

A few of the topics presented in this orientation are listed below:

  • Getting Started at Florida State College
  • Becoming a College Learner in a Community of Learners
  • Discovering Important College Policies and Procedures
  • Exploring the College Catalog
  • Preparing for Placement Testing
  • Making an Appointment with an Academic Advisor
  • Registering for Your First Classes Registration Process

As a part of orientation, once you have prepared and completed your placement tests, you will meet with a counselor or advisor who will work with you regarding appropriate courses to take during your first term. He or she also will recommend that you make a formal appointment at a later date, to discuss your course requirements and career plans in greater detail.
