Flexible Classes

All classes are hybrids, all taught in the evening. Ancillary courses such as chemistry and microbiology can be taken as hybrid evening courses. Chemistry and microbiology are offered at all times of the day, as face-to-face and as hybrids.

Graduation Rates

Florida State College graduates 10-15 students per year with the average of approximately 12. Over half of our students are offered jobs during their internships, and the rest usually continue their education. We have graduates working on B.S. and Ph.D. degrees. Biotechnology is a $500 billion per year industry, and there are numerous job opportunities in Florida.

Program Description

Students prepare for a career as a laboratory technician in a nationally recognized enterprise Contract Research Organization (CRO) co-laboratory. This state-of-the-art training facility is under the same roof as Eurofins, an International research, environmental, and food analysis laboratory located within the biotechnology spaces in the Advance Technology Center (ATC) at Downtown Campus.

Degrees & Certificates

The Biotechnology Laboratory Technician Associate in Science A.S. degree:
This 61-credit hour degree path blends hands-on training and academic preparation for entering the workforce as a research laboratory technician for cell culture and molecular biology.
The Biotechnology Testing Laboratory Technician Associate in Science A.S. degree:
This 61-credit hour degree path blends hands-on training and academic preparation for entering the workforce as a laboratory technician for testing laboratories in environmental and food analytical work.
The Biotechnology 19-hour certificate:
This 19-credit hour training certificate prepares students for further workforce and academic studies.
The Biotechnology 30-hour certificate:
This 30-credit hour certificate prepares students for entry-level laboratory assistant positions at testing laboratories in environmental and food analytical work.

Enrolling in the Program

Cohorts form each fall and are limited to 24 students. The courses Introduction to Biotechnology Methods, Biotechnology Methods I and II, Protein Biotechnology and Cell Culture, and Bioinformatics are only taught once each year in the Biotechnology labs in the ATC. Other General Education and prerequisites can be taken at any of the college campuses or centers. Please see the Recommended Cohort Sequence section for course availability.
