Brief College History

1965 Established as Florida Junior College at Jacksonville (FJC)
Aug. 22, 1966 First Day of Class in College History; initial enrollment: 2,610 students
1968 Control of community colleges shifted from local school boards to district boards of trustees appointed by the governor.
1969 FJC receives full associates level accreditation from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.
Aug. 27, 1970 North Campus, the College’s first permanent campus, opens.
1986 College changes name to Florida Community College at Jacksonville.
Jan. 9, 2007 College receives accreditation to offer its first bachelor’s degree, the Bachelor of Applied Science in Fire Science Management.
Fall Term 2007 College offers its first upper division courses for the new bachelor’s degree.
Fall Term 2008 The College offers three new bachelor’s degrees.
March 3, 2009 The College announce its new name as Florida State College.
May 9, 2009 Six graduates of the Bachelor of Applied Science in Fire Science Management achieve their degrees, the first presented by FCCJ.
Aug. 1, 2009 The former FCCJ begins full operations as Florida State College at Jacksonville.
Aug. 31, 2009 Florida State College at Jacksonville begins its first full academic year.
May 8, 2010 Florida State College at Jacksonville holds its first Commencement Ceremony. Among more than 5,800 degrees and certificate awarded are its first-ever Bachelor of Science degrees in Nursing (22) and Bachelor Of Applied Science in Supervision and Management (69) and Bachelor of Applied Science in Computer Systems Networking and Telecommunications (four).
